UBTech Graduate Kristopher Morgan Earns Runner-Up Recognition in National Skills Competition

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Kristopher Morgan, a graduate of UBTech and a diesel mechanic at BHI, recently secured the runner-up position in a national competition held by SkillsUSA. The competition aimed to select the United States Representative for the prestigious WorldSkills event scheduled to take place in France in the fall of 2024.

Morgan, with his background in diesel mechanics, advanced through multiple elimination rounds, showcasing his expertise and versatility in various technical challenges. One notable task involved designing the hydraulic system of a log splitter from scratch, complete with a CAD drawing of the schematic, requiring contestants to come up with original ideas for their log splitters. Morgan’s skills were further tested as he performed a range of calculations related to his design.

The competition also required a video presentation, where Morgan demonstrated his proficiency by teaching a comprehensive DOT Inspection. An interview segment provided an opportunity for Morgan to articulate his knowledge and passion for diesel mechanics. Additionally, he undertook a practical examination, dissecting an oil filter, analyzing its contents, and sending the filter back to the elimination committee for evaluation—an innovative approach that added a real-world component to the competition.

Despite being informed by SkillsUSA that he would not be the chosen representative for the WorldSkills competition, Morgan remains optimistic and determined. “While it was disappointing to not earn the top spot, I’m not going to let it discourage me. Simply being a part of this process was a huge milestone in my career – a truly amazing opportunity. I am committed to persistently learning and advancing in my profession.”

Morgan expressed gratitude to Justin Jorgensen at UBTech for guidance and assistance in his projects and credited BHI for supporting his participation by providing time off and access to the necessary facilities. He also thanked UBTech for their support throughout the entire competition process.

UBTech President Weight praised Morgan’s achievement, stating, “What an extraordinary accomplishment. To emerge as one of the nation’s top diesel mechanics is a resounding testament to his unwavering dedication, exceptional skill set, and the invaluable guidance he received from both instructors and industry professionals.”
